Boogie Boarding
 |
Surfing is an exciting sport, but for the vast majortity of people it is only a spectator
sport.
However, boogie boarding allows almost anyone to experience the thrill of riding atop the waves.
In the early 1970's a surfboard builder named Tom Morey designed his first boogie board out of scrap polyethylene
foam. The idea was for riders to lie on their stomach and ride the wave in to shore, similar to riding over snow
on a sled instead of snow skis. |
The concept quickly became popular. By 1977 his company was producing 80,000
Morey Boogies per year. In 1979 the first professional bodyboarding contest was held in California. Now, the sport
is being enjoyed world wide. Some also call this body boarding.
Boogie boards today are readily available along the shore at beach shops, souvenir stores, and even drug and grocery
stores. They are very affordable, often selling for under $20.00. Boogie boards come in different sizes, from a
little over two feet long to almost four feet in length. They are very maneuverable, and the technique can be quickly
learned, even after a few tries.
Boogie boards provide a great way for people of all ages and sizes to experience
and enjoy the waves.
